Birmingham’s New Clean Air Zone

June 1st, 2021

From 1 June 2021, drivers of older (more polluting) cars, taxis and vans, who travel into the centre of Birmingham, will face a charge of £8 per day. Buses and HGVs will be charged £50 a day. It will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A non-compliant vehicle driving in the Zone will pay once for the day. There are temporary exemptions for commercial and community vehicles, and some workers and residents.

We recommend the first thing you check is whether your company (or personal) vehicle is eligible to drive freely within the city centre, or if you will be charged, by entering your vehicle reg into the Government vehicle checker.

A spokesperson for Birmingham city council has said: “The CAZ (clean air zone) is just one element of a much bigger move to improve air quality and health in the city. We are investing in public realm projects and other infrastructure schemes to improve walking and cycling facilities in the city. The Birmingham bus statement committed circa £173m to improving Birmingham’s bus services.”

Some fear the charges will hit businesses struggling to get back on their feet after lockdown and also people who cannot afford to upgrade their vehicles.

Assay Studios falls inside the new clean air zone in Birmingham, so ensure you check your vehicle reg before you head to us!
